There were many little independent bookstores all over town. Most of the had signs drawn on their front windows much like this one. Funny, happy, or expressing the owners feeling much like this one. Yes, Cindy, surprisingly, they did appear to mainly be English books.

It’s not too surprising I guess, since most of the Portuguese speak beautiful English. Some of them sound like they’ve developed different dialects you might hear in America. I heard several waiters already break out in English,Spanish and French as well as their own Portuguese at the tables around them. I’m not shy to tell them-especially after a couple of glasses of port-how wonderful their ability to do that is.

I should have learned French in Jr. High.

Here’s another one. I don’t know what this one’s means.

Tomorrow, or maybe Tuesday, we’re going to the Lello & Irmao Bookstore. The author of the Harry Potter series worked in Porto a year and this staircase is her inspiration when she writes about the one at Hogwarts.

Tomorrow we also head up the Douro River for mor Port and scenery.
