The Old Art Of Good Manners

We live in a fast paced world that’s changing quickly, and the pace of change is increasing. It’s easy to not learn the old rules. It’s easier to forget them.

I came from working class people. While my parents raised me to be polite and respect people, I never learned some of the finer rules of etiquette. After all the years of education and practicing law in Houston, you’d think I would of learn some. But I didn’t.

I guess I was too busy, self involved and inconsiderate.

A couple of years ago was lucky enough to meet a lady that by her actions taught me more than Miss Manners. She’s taught me that the rules that I thought were out dated because of technology changes and our informal culture are really more powerful than ever.

She sends thank you cards through snail mail on nice stationary when you do something for her, or even a friend of hers. She celebrates your successes, she supports you when you’re down.

I’m a book lover. I’ve lost my mother this summer, and I’m having difficulty recovering. She has seen that and sent surprise books to me as a little pick up. She’s always thoughtful.

I’m fifty-seven years old and I’m changing my behavior because I’ve seen the wonderful power of old fashion thoughtfulness.

Thanks for teaching me, Cindy.
