Guate y Familia

When I left Antigua I had been in the country of Guatemala almost 3 months, this is somewhere in-between double or triple my initial estimates. Having been there this long I would like to think that I have begun to see passed the superficial, gaining a more intimate understanding of the culture. While this won’t be the case with every place that I visit, Guatemala has had a big impact on me and thus deserves its own reflection.

This is where things got a little difficult writing wise. When I started this blog I knew that I didn’t want this to be a typical travel blog – went here, ate this, such and such place was awesome etc. It needed to be deeper than that; otherwise I’d never be able to keep up with it. As such, this thing is more my personal journal, a tale of my growth and gains as I roam the planet. I am happy that a few folks (i.e., Mom, G-ma) have been enjoying following along. As I sat down to write about Guate, I hit a mental wall – how do I break away from my lazy presumptuous thinking about other cultures? Is there a way to get passed my basic travel bitch mindset – “OMG the people here are so nice and friendly,” “Everyone here is poor but they’re still so happy, I don’t need material things,” “Corruption here is rampant, I’m so lucky to live in a developed country with proper regulation and infrastructure.” If that was the best that I could come up with, before I got through 5 countries you’d be reading me bemoan the fact that no one had managed to build a structure tall enough for me to toss myself off of yet. Unexpectedly it was a famous 15th Century French philosopher that came to my rescue.
