Traveling Through Jordan

My guide in Jordan at Petra talking with me in front of the Treasury.

Last year my wife, Melinda, and I spent almost a month in the Middle East. We traveled through Frankfurt to Tel Aviv. After touring though Israel, we crossed the Jordan River into Jordan.

After we toured Jordan, we approached Petra. On the way, our guide told us that there would be many young children, as young as seven or eight, begging to sell us beads and necklaces. He asked us not to give them any money, nor to buy anything from them or give them any money.

He explained that they were deprived of an education and their future to sell tourists souvenirs, and he didn’t want other children to be forced to do it. He was passionate about it, and I thought as he talked to us with tears in his eyes that he was a real Jordanian patriot.

We did as he requested. It was hard. The children were everywhere with little bracelets and colored beads asking only a small amount. They were friendly and sweet and not in any way aggressive or rude.

After we left Petra, we continued through Jordan. Today those children’s faces came back to me. I can see their eyes looking straight at me. I hope my guide was right.
